Volume of interest
The volume of interest, sometimes simply referred to as “the volume,” is the part of your motion capture lab that you will be recording. Even though your Qualisys cameras may be able to view most of the room, the volume of interest is a specific space entirely within the cameras’ view that will be calibrated for the type of motion you plan to record.
When planning your volume, consider the movements your subjects will be performing. For example, if you are recording lower body gait, you will need a long straight volume that does not necessarily come above waist level, whereas a jumping test will not need to be as long but will require more vertical space.
To reconstruct 3D motion capture data, each marker needs to be seen by at least two cameras—preferably three or more—so it is usually best to place the cameras as far back as possible from the volume so that you can get the most overlap of camera views.
