Smoothing your data

Spikes are discontinuities between consecutive frames in a trajectory characterized by abrupt changes in acceleration. They can be caused by issues during tracking, such as when a marker becomes blocked from view of a camera, or due to labeling errors, such as when two markers become swapped in QTM. You can help avoid spikes by making sure your camera setup is optimized for the best marker visibility and by using a well-trained AIM model.

If spikes are due to swapped trajectories or other labeling issues, you should fix the labels before continuing. Any remaining spikes can be easily identified and smoothed in the trajectory editor, as shown in the following chapters.

Keep in mind that it is recommended to fill any gaps in your data before you apply smoothing.
